Angel At The Wheel?

I had been laid off from my job and I had to go to the downtown unemployment office to sign up for benefits until I was called back to work. We were really having a problem financially then and I was feeling down.

I had borrowed my Mom's Ford escort which had front wheel drive and no power steering to go there. On the way home I rounded a curve and one of the front wheels blew. I held on to the steering wheel, but it was not really that hard to get to the side of the road.

I had only been there for a minute trying to figure out what to do
when a man in a large white pick-up truck drove up. He said it was too hot to leave a lady sitting beside the road stranded and he told me to get into his truck and he would take me home. I never get into a vehicle with strangers, but I did this time. I then became nervous and sat really close to the door so that I could jump out if necessary.

The man talked calmly to me. He said he knew my parents and that his name was John. He was probably in his 50's (I am guessing because he had white hair). I wasn't really surprised when he drove into my parent's driveway because he said he knew them.

When I walked in my Mom's front door she was really surprised to see me and no car. I explained what happened and after she had finished chiding me for riding with a stranger she began to try to identify who it was. Neither she nor my Dad knew him or his truck.

We never saw him again and we lived in a small town where almost everybody is either family related or they know each other. Noone else whom I asked knew him either.

An angel? I may never know.

Footnote: My parent's neighbor was a mechanic and he and my Dad went to retrieve the car that afternoon. They said there were skid marks on the road and in the dirt and that it was impossible for someone as small as me to have held that car without flipping it.
