Peter | That He Will Deny Him Three Times | Peter |
Then Jesus spoke unto them His last discourse, saying:
"Do you know why I bent down and washed your feet? You call me your Master and your Lord, and you speak well, for so I am. If I, your Lord and your Master, have washed your feet, you should also wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, so that you should do as I have done unto you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, the servant is not a greater man than his lord, neither is He that is sent greater than He that sent Him. If you know these things, you are happy in doing them.
"Little children, I have only a little while left to be
with you . You shall seek me, and, as I said to the Jews, where
I am going, you cannot come. So now I give you a new commandment.
Love one another. As I have loved you, love each other. By this
shall all men know that you are my Disciples, if you indeed have
love for one another.
Then Simon Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, where are you going?
"Where I am going," Jesus answered, you cannot follow.
But you shall follow me afterward."
"Why cannot I follow you now?" Peter persisted. "I
would lay down my life for you. I'll go to prison with you-anything."
"Will you indeed lay down your life for my sake?" Jesus
asked. "Verily, verily, I say unto you, before the dawn of
another day. you will deny me three times."
Peter shrank back in horror. He could hardly believe what the
Master said.
"Deny you?" Peter echoed. "Not I, Lord."
"You will all deny me," Jesus said sadly, but without
reproach.
"Not I!"
"Nor I.-"
All maintained their loyalty stoutly.
"Let not your hearts be troubled," Jesus advised
them, in His quiet and soothing voice. "You believe in God.
Believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions. If
it were not so, I would have told you. I go now to prepare a place
for you.
"I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to His
Father in Heaven except by believing in me. Whoever has looked
upon me has seen the Father. Believe that I am the Father, that
the Father is expressed in me. Whatsoever you shall ask in my
name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the
Son. If you love me, keep my commandments. I will not leave you
comfortless; ( He would later send his Holy Spirit to comfort
after he had arisen from the grave. ) I will come to you. After
a little while, the world will see me no more. But you see me;
because I live, you shall live also.
"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give unto you. Let
not your hearts be troubled, nor let them be afraid. If you loved
me, you would rejoice, for I go unto the Father, Who is greater
than I. Greater love hath no man than this, that he shall lay
down his life for his friends. You are my friends. Henceforth
I shall not call you servants, but I shall call you friends. You
have not chosen me, but I have chosen you. These things I have
spoken unto you, that in me you might find peace. In the world
you shall have trials and tribulations, but be of good cheer.
I have overcome the world."
