This poem is not meant to be poetic particularly, but
rather tells the story of James Shelton Hicks, son of James Hicks
and Rebecca Riley Hicks, Grandson of Robert Hicks, Sr and Winnifrit
Combs Sumner Hicks. The photo above is the schoolhouse Great Grandfather
built and it is still standing as of this date-5/18/1999 near
Gentryville, MO..
| The little school house
Great Grandfather built,
still stands there today;
although it's bell is as silent
As the children of yesterday.
It has stood for at least
a long century now-
It was built of wood and nails
and not too far away from it
Is the family's old pump well.
The old corn crib
He built on his farm
still stands there true and strong.
A mighty oak two centuries old
Still holds it's vigil long.
Trees lend their shade
to the waters that flow In the creek
that runs through the land.
It still stands just as it did then
As a tribute to that long ago man.
Things were built to last back then-
The work was hard and long,
But there was love
in that old farmhouse
And that's what made them strong.
