Our Heritage

by: Patricia Osborn Orton

Our forefathers came to this mighty land
When it was naught but earth
And death claimed lives in hundreds
Along with each new birth.

But they stood their ground and battled
Each disease that plagued the land
And they built their cabins quickly
with their hands, each, man by man.

The way was dark and dreary
As they traveled here and there
And they were sorely tempted
To give up in despair.

But they were strong and true
And somehow made a way
To provide for food and clothing
And to live another day.

Today this land has grown
Into a nation, strong and true
And it's all because of those dear ones
Who stayed for me and you.

Let's never let their memory die-
Let's search until we find
A way to leave a legacy of
Those fathers of yours and mine.
