CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

by: Patricia Osborn Orton

The big top is coming
The circus is in town.
Here comes Bonkers,
The redhaired clown.

The parade is beginning.
I can hear the band.
The tuba, the trumpet,
It's all so very grand.

Next come the horses,
Stepping so high.
They dance and they prance
As they pass us by.

The brightly painted wagons
Roll along behind
With tigers and bears-
The next one has a lion.

Next come the elephants
Linked trunk to tail.
Can't you hear the calliope?
There's just too much to tell.

Later they'll put up the tent.
Tonight we'll see the show.
High-wires and trapezes.
I just can't wait to go.

Acrobats and hoops of fire-
A lady with a beard.
One moment there's a funny clown
And next, a dancing bear.

When the show is over
And we're safe at home in bed
We'll dream of bears and acrobats
And a clown with hair of red.
