THE PARADOX

I wonder just how far it is
Across the ocean's breadth,
And how far the mighty river runs,
How deep the great sea's depth?
Mighty ships from every place
Sail along their tops
but it's amazing just how quickly
You can sink a little rock.
For most everything that's in them
There's a parallel on land;
Sea butterfly, a sponge, a jelly fish,
Cat fish, sea dog, a sea fan.
There's even a sea cucumber,
A sea cradle, a cow fish, a sword,
A sea serpent, a bull-head fish,
A sea feather; upon my word!
A sea gooseberry, A sheep-head,
A snail darter, an electric eel,
And how would it feel to come upon
A sea lion or elephant seal?
Would you believe a spoonbill fish?
Why, there's even a buffalo.
A rock fish, a sea horse
And some that are colored gold.
If there's a mermaid down there
I wonder what she'd be?
The top half belongs on land,
And the bottom in the sea.
