Shortly after World War 2, a Catholic priest provided relief at a parish in Washington state where the assigned priest had left on emergency leave. In the middle of the night during a driving rain storm, he was awakened by a persistent knock at the front door of the priest's residence.

He arose and met a soldier in full dress uniform at the door. The soldier explained that his mother was seriously ill and needed a priest to come to the home and administer The Sacrament of the Sick. After receiving careful directions from the soldier, the priest drove to the home and was escorted by an attendant to the sick woman's bedroom.

The priest ministered to the woman and performed the blessings. Afterwards, the woman asked the priest how he knew that she needed him. He explained that her son had summoned him and pointed to a portrait of him on the woman's nightstand.

Her reply... "My son is dead. He died in the war!"
